Canvassing: Yes You Can!

by Nancy Phillips

We’re only about six months out from the crucial November mid-terms and this is a prime time to reach out to voters. Indivisible and other pro-democracy organizations will be working hard to reach voters during this time. One of the best ways is throughh in-person contact--canvassing.

I’ve done my share of canvassing and it doesn't have to be intimidating. You'll get training and support and you'll always have a partner. I've canvassed with my daughter, but it can be fun to meet someone new too.

When discussing successful campaigns, managers and journalists often emphasize the importance of the "ground game" in achieving victory. While personal contact is critical, it can be intimidating. Here are some tips to make the process easier and more effective:

  • Never canvas alone: Always have a partner for safety and encouragement. I find that working with my daughter gives me the courage to keep going.

  • Coordinate your approach: Decide beforehand who will lead the conversation and who will manage the flyers to avoid talking over one another.

  • Stick to the provided literature: You will receive specific instructions on which issues to emphasize, supported by the materials you give to voters.

  • Safety first: Ensure you complete your rounds before dark.

  • Typically you will be given the addresses to approach so you don't have to knock on every door. We are visiting Dems or Dem-leaning people.

Following these guidelines will help ensure our outreach is both safe and impactful. I can report that when you finish your rounds, you will be proud of the work you have done.

Indivisible Evanston is partnering with the Indivisible Chicago Alliance to help coordinate group canvassing. Since we're near two swing states, Michigan and Wisconsin, there will be many opportunities before the midterms to canvass within a 1-1/2 hour drive.

Indivisible Chicago will help coordinate transportation, training and materials. You can get a group together or they will pair you with others.
